Duggi

Duggi

This is a small kettle drum similar to the bass drum (baya) of the tabla pair.  Like the baya, the main skin has a permanent spot of black paste that deepens the resonance of the drum and damps some of its partials.  It is tied to the waist of the singer who normally strikes it with the left hand while playing the ektara with the right.  A variety of open and damped strokes is used along with finger snaps and varying pressure of the heel of the hand to support and decorate the meter of the song.
