Khol

Commonly used for Vaisnava devotional kirtan, this barrel drum is used by some Bauls, particularly in the Birbhum district of West Bengal.   It has a body of terracotta with laced-on heads, and like the similar drums of Hindustani and Karnatak music, these heads comprise several different layers of skin and use tuning spots.  Sophisticated in construction, the drum has an equally sophisticated tradition of performance stemming from its association with kirtan accompaniment.  In the hands of an expert like Uma Rani Das Baul, it becomes a medium of exceptional musical artistry.
