Murshid Chand Baba is rich with my love (Sahaber saab Rani Baba, Noor er Noorrani)

As the lord has his lady, and the angel his beloved,
Murshid Chand Baba (1) is rich with my love. ( x 2)

Baba is the life-force of my love

His love has driven me fervent. (x 2)

I keep chanting Allah’s name- the echo of my soul… (x 2)

Murshid Chand Baba is rich with my love.

Chand Baba of Jullu is rich with my love.

When you utter Baba’s name on your lips

A summon is issued forth,
The lover- beloved’s union of love bears the angel’s mark. (x 2)
Murshid Chand Baba is rich with my love.

Chand Baba of Jullu is rich with my love.

Immortalize the name of Baba!

The disciples are like the sun, (x 2)
In vain does Asmat (2) cry on beholding the beauty! (x 2)
Murshid Chand Baba is rich with my love.

Chand Baba of Jullu is rich with my love.

(1) Jullu Chand or Chand Baba was a famous guru born in Kalaberi village in Nadia. During his lifetime, he was revered as a Pir throughout Nadia and had many disciples. This song, composed by one of his renowned disciples, Asmat Fakir, follows the typical structure of a Sufi song. Here, the guru is conceptualized as the beloved, a union with whom is seen as a way of reaching Allah.

(2) Asmat Fakir, one of Chand Baba’s most renowned disciples, is a famous composer and performer in his own right.

Translator’s Note: This is an instance of an aashiqui song or a Sufi song centred on the theme of love. Here, the disciple imagines his older guru as his lover and claims a union with him a means of discovering Allah. As in many Sufi songs, there is a strong sub-text of homoeroticism which informed not only these songs, but characterized many of the guru-disciple relationships within such pedagogy.
